1960s World Series With a count of one ball and no strikes, the Pirates' second baseman smashed a historic long drive over the left field wall, ending the contest and crowning the Pirates as World Series champions. As the Pirates erupted, the Yankees stood across the field in stunned disbelief. The Yankees scored 55 runs in the series and the pirates only scored 27 runs The improbable champions were outscored, outhit, and outplayed, but had managed to pull out a victory regardless

reasons why it was the grateest upset in the history of sports

#1 The Yankees scored 55 runs in the series and the pirates only scored 27 runs

#2 Mazeroski became the first player to hit a game winning walk off home run in the seventh game, to win a World Series.
    # 3 Bobby Richardson of the Yankees was named MVP of the Series, the only time that someone from the defeated team has been so honored.

#4 Years later, Mickey Mantle was quoted as saying that losing the 1960 series was the biggest disappointment of his career, the only loss amateur or professional he cried actual tears over. For Bill Mazeroski, by contrast, it was the highlight.

#5 This World Series featured seven past, present, or future league Most Valuable Players. The Pirates had two the Yankees 5 players

#6 A part-owner of the Pirates Bing Crosby who was too superstitious to watch the Series live, Crosby listened to the decisive contest with hi wife Kathryn and two friends on a shortwave radio in Paris, France. Wanting to watch the game at a later date only if the Pirates won, he arranged for a company to record it. After viewing the kinescope, he placed it in his wine cellar, where it went untouched for 49 years. It was finally found by Robert Bader, vice-president of marketing and production for Bing Crosby Enterprises, while looking through videotapes of Crosby's television specials which were to be transferred to DVD. The five-reel set is the only known complete copy of the historic game, which was originally broadcast in color.[9]

That`s pretty big but I`d say the biggest upset in sports history was the New York Jets defeating the Baltimore Colts in Superbowl III, nobody gave the jets a chance and it probably sealed the AFL-NFL merger.

I am a NY Jets fan and even I don't think that is the biggest upset of all time.

For me it really is not even close.

The 1980 US Olympic Hockey team beating Russia. Russia had an all star, world class lineup that was rarely defeated. The US put out a bunch of amateurs and beat them.

It is the greatest moment in US sports history.

please name another time in sporting history that a team was out scored by over 50% in a series, finals or championship game and still won

its so rare that i cant think of another time a defeated teams player was named finals or game mvp i think it has happen 2 or 3 times but maybe not

then add in the other factors it really is the upset of all time

Namath, who completed 17 out of 28 passes for 206 yards, was named the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player, despite not throwing a touchdown pass in the game or any passes at all in the fourth quarter. how sad

Baltimore posted a 13-1 record .The Jets finished the 1968 AFL season at 11-3,

helping add to the hype Baltimore defeated the Cleveland Browns, 34-0, in the 1968 NFL Championship Game. The Jets defeated the Oakland Raiders, 27-23, in the1968 AFL Championship Game.

the sport writes felt the afl lacked in talent once again hype hype hype

Johnny Unitas the colts best player was not even in the game till the 4th , quarter and did score the only tuchdown for the colts

the miracle on ice still sends shivers down my spine

now this is up there.... all the world watching

The U.s.s.r pros vrs mostly american collage boys

an exhibition game The Americans lost 10–3, to the u.s.s.r and DefensemanJack O'Callahan pulled a ligament in his knee

the usa was a 7 seed and beat the number 1 seed

there is a bad spot for me that the The USA's final game, against Finland, was the game which clinched the gold medal for the United States but other then that

It is very true. I was born and lived in NY for the majority of my life. The Pens thing I have explained many times in The NHL Thread and won't bore you here with that.

Yeah most people think the US beat Russia for the gold and forgot about the Fins.

You can end this thread now that we know this is the biggest upset in sports history.

'9ers over Cowboys in the 1981 playoffs.

On a 3rd-and-3 play, with his primary receiver covered, Montana rolled right and threw the ball off balance to Dwight Clark in the end zone, who leaped up and caught the ball to tie the game at 27(Now known as "The Catch"), with the extra point giving the 49ers the lead. Despite this, the Cowboys had one last chance to win. And indeed, on the first play of the next possession, Cowboys receiver Drew Pearson caught a pass from Danny White and got to midfield before he was pulled down by the jersey at the 49ers 44 yard line by Cornerback Eric Wright saving a potential late-touchdown. On the next play, White was sacked by Lawrence Pillers and fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Jim Stuckey, giving the 49ers the win and a trip to their first ever Super Bowl

    Good Times.

If you've never heard it, listen to Bob Sheridan's call of Buster Douglas' KO. Jim Lampley's call was terrible compared to this.

i got a lot of love for the 49ers but the last winning steeler superbowl with holms makeing the last minute grab is the only play that should be called "The Catch" i could even here some make the david tyree argument

also the best football i ever watched was the greenbay and 49er playoff games of the early and late 90s
