Quarterback Andrew Walter was informed the New England Patriots are releasing him, an NFL source said Friday.

This means that rookie quarterback Brian Hoyer has, for now, won the competition to be Tom Brady's backup.

Hoyer was impressive in the Patriots' regular-season finale against the Giants, and the Patriots are not expected to trade for or sign another veteran QB.

Saints acquired TE David Thomas from the Patriots in exchange for an undisclosed 2011 draft pick.

New England also acquired blocking TE Michael Matthews from the Giants for a late-rounder in 2011 and released Alex Smith. Thomas, 26, was banged up throughout his first two seasons, but has soft hands and can stretch the field. He's a very nice insurance policy behind starter Jeremy Shockey.
