The S50 is bullshit (no?)

If I get the s50 all set up in my car, can I record say a 1-hour show while the car is turned off? Just guessing I would say no if the s50 runs off the cig lighter, but I'm not sure. And if that's the case then what is the easiest way to make it so I can record a show with the car turned off? I have a Pontiac Vibe by the way.

from what i understand the car needs to be running for it to work. although you could give it a try just in case i'm wrong....

another method would be to purchase a home docking unit (if you can find one) and record using that....

or you could save yourself the $99 (cost of the home docking unit) and just buy an ac/dc converter and use the car dock in the house.....

    LAdies and Gentlemenz,

I have found an adapter with the proper voltage (5V) to power your S50 indoors.

Radio Shack Digital Camera power Adapter (product # 273-1696) has a 5V setting and draws up to 2000mA. (it only draws what it needs.) In comparison the sirius supplied car outlet power supply says it is 5V, 1.5 Amps. So, this seems to be working. THE COST IS 27.99

You will also need an Adaptaplug "G" 3.0mmO.D.x1.1mm I.D. (this is the plug head-the 3 that come with it are will not fit). THE COST IS 4.99

I have it in the office now, antenna pointing towards the large window, and VIOLA. SO FAR, SO GOOD. But uf it blows anybodies recievers, I'm not responsible. [IMG]

And it broadcasts via the FM transmitter, so my peeps at work can listen. :) <<i didn't say that if it is illegal.

    I was torn about s50 as well, but . . .

for those of you thinking about getting the s50, i just wanted to give my experience. like many of you, i was torn about keeping s50 i got for christmas or getting the http://www.timetraxtech.com (believe me, there were many a day i waster at work doing research on both or something similar]. it wasn't an easy decision, but i decided to go with the s50. here are my reasons:

    - for once, living on the west coast (LA area) is going to be an advantage (for a while, it sucked being out here as the sirius broadcasting started while i was at work . . . oh well) as i can set the s50 to record the live broadcast starting at 3:00 am my time and turn it off right before i go to work; since i leave to work at 6:30 (9:30 est) i can listen to what i may miss on the way (just like many of you, i have an almost 1 hour commute). [by the way, ito use the s50 at home i bought an adapter at radio shack: Multi-Voltage 800mA Power Adapter (set on 4.5 VDC) w/ 5.5. mm adaptaplug (plug "G"))].
-whatever i miss i can bring to work or listen to at the gym
-the s50 looks great as i'm a gadget geek. i've had no problems so far with it (knock on wood)
    - the time trax system looks great, but i don't really want to have to plug my mp3 player in and having to go through the chore of putting howard on my mp3 player on a daily basis. sure, i would love to archive his stuff . . . but right now it's really about convenience. [on that note, i am in the market or looking for a ripping program that would allow me to rip what i'm streaming on my computer. so if you know of a great one that would work with the s50, let me know]

I have the adapter and it works well indoors - get it!

i'm running the s50 in my home as well using the radio shack digital camera adapter. on top of that i'm running the s-50 through the line-in jack of my computer, downloaded "i-sound wma mp3 recorder (abyssmedia)" and can now rip howard onto my computer and the s50 at the same time! i've never been an archive geek, but howard's going to turn me into one.

I have so been on the fence regarding the s50 - but I broke down today and bought one with my fingers crossed. I hope I don't regret it. Here's a question, though...the FM wireless modulator...the guy at Best Buy said it should work fine, but if the sound isn't great, they could do something different to get a better sound. Once I activated it, I did have a little bit of static on the drive from time to time - is that what he's talking about?

I have the S50 and it is great. Yes, it is different then the 25.00 cheapy portable I wore around my neck listening to H. I am going to have to put more energy into capturing the show but I have no choice. I have the home dock (husband ordered it from Crutchfield early on). I will just have to set a new pattern of listening. Record in the AM and listen in the PM.

I'd like to restate that the S50 is a piece of junk, esp for the price. I bought a cheapo 3G MP3 player for only $130. There is nothing attractive about the S50 unless you have the money to burn in the first place.

I bought an S50 primarily because everywhere was sold out of the Sportster reply. I didn't like the Starmate, and there is no way in hell I'd miss Howard's first broadcast.

Overall I am pleased with the purchase.
    pros:
-I can automatically record the last 2 hours of the show I typically didn't get to hear in the past AND listen to it on the drive home.
-Color screen and audio cues are fantastic
    cons:
    -no portable live listening

Once the executive boombox is available at the end of the month I'll listen live at home.

My brother bought the xact streamjockey with the boombox last year and he fucken hates it...super clunky interface and remote. He agreed the S50 has a much better interface and remote.

You get what you pay for.

The S50 rocks. Everyone I've seen talking shit about it on this board doesn't even have one. The unit was $279 with the rebate, I take the car dock in the house and use an adapter, I record the whole east coast feed and can listen to every minute of it through out the day. If you don't have the S50, then you have to be tied to a radio from 6-10 in order to hear the show. The S50 is the only way to go.

    I totally agree!!

    technically silly

The S50 is a slick looking piece. I own one.
    What sucks…
    - I dislike the computer interface, once you put broadcast on it, the only thing you can do is listen to it or delete it.

    - There are too many fucking control options and they are everywhere. The fast forward on the unit when undocked SUCKS. Try skipping 30 minutes in 30 second increments. Not cool.

    - It records everything you listen to and then you have to delete it manually.

    - You have to have the unit turned on to record. Even the old and sucky VCR could turn itself on to record shit. Power should be enough, but noooooo.

    What is cool…
    - The damn thing will give you your Howard if you are willing to put up with this other shit and you cannot listen to the show live or on replay…

    What is my opinion?

    - Sirius should give every S50 owner $350 off of the next unit that has better controls, more memory, and iPod use. (we are beta testers anyway)

    Re: technically silly

to me this is the most befuddling let down of this technology...i cannot believe that once you turn it off you have to go back to the beginning of a recording, and from there you have to use this lethargic ff feature to get caught up..its amazing..even the cheapest mp3 players on the market are not like this..i rarely if ever have the time to sit down and listen to 2 straight hours of something
  19. flowerfeeder Full Member

The tedious fast forward and no automatic turn on/off are my biggest complaints. I have to set my alarm clock an hour earlier in order to get up just to turn the thing on to record Howard. I also have to leave it on ALL DAY while I'm at work because it will not shut off after recording. This can't be good for the unit.

I can't wait for the home dock. I hear it has automatic turn on/off.

I also think the battery life sucks. I usually can't get more than 3 hours before I have to recharge. Plus when you attach it to a power source while playing it jumps back to the beginning of what you are listening to forcing you to fast forward tediously.

However, if it wouldn't be for the S50, I wouldn't get to hear the show. I listen every afternoon when I get home.

I use the Radio Shack adapter in my home.

What are you recording it with through the pc? Are you connecting via wire or just microphone recording?

    Thanks

I agree 100% the S50 rocks! There are a few things I would change but overall it comes through on its promises!
