Nope, it's not hard at all. It just requires a little creativity.

When you strike your finger down on the fretboard... that causes the string to vibrate all by itself, though somewhat less strongly than picking it conventionally with the other hand. Over-driven guitar amps in rock-n-roll produce such a compressed sound that these less strong vibrations are still enough to drive and saturate the amp. In the guitar playing world they call this 'hammering-on and pulling-off'.

It's more difficult to do on acoustic guitars... but in Spanish Gypsy Flamenco guitar playing it's pretty common. Look on YouTube for 'Sabicas - Arabian Dance'. He does it intermittently in this song.
