Woman Guilty of Stabbing Husband 193 Times

HOUSTON (AP) - A jury Wednesday convicted a woman of murder for stabbing her husband 193 times, rejecting her claim that she acted in self-defense after years of abuse.

Susan Wright, 27, could get up to 99 years in prison. The sentencing phase was to begin in the afternoon.

Prosecutors said she killed Jeffrey Wright in 2003 to collect on his $200,000 life insurance policy.

Jeffrey Wright, 34, was found buried in the couple's back yard after Susan Wright's attorney reported the body to authorities.

Wright, a former topless dancer, testified that her husband beat her repeatedly and that right before he was killed, he raped her and threatened her with a knife.

However, prosecutors said she filed her only domestic abuse report to police the day after the slaying.

She may be a psycho killer, but she looks pretty hot. :p

Maybe I should write to her in prison? ;)

Just hide all the knives if she ever gets out on early release and comes to see you.

I dont think its her arm, maybe mine? Yeah, probably mine. Wait a sec, if she stabbed her husband 193 times, either the body would be bad enough not to be recognized, or her arm would be useless. 193 times doesnt seem possible.

That's why I could never go into law enforcement. Can you imagine what the body looked like?

    Susan Wright was convicted
    of murdering her husband.
    Some of the case's highlights:

    Accused of murder
Susan Wright, a former stripper and mother of two, was arrested in January 2003 after the family dog dug up her husband's body in the back yard of their northwest Harris County home. He'd been stabbed 193 times.

Wright admitted to the stabbing but pleaded not guilty. Her lawyers argued it was self-defense after years of abuse.

    -----

    Deadly seduction
District Attorney Kelly Siegler told jurors that Susan Wright seduced her husband in their candlelit bedroom, tied him to the bedposts naked with neckties and bathrobe sashes, then nicked his penis and stabbed him over and over and over.

"What should have been a love nest, what should have been a night of lovemaking, turned into a torture chamber," Siegler said.

The motive: Jeffrey Wright's $200,000 life insurance policy.

    -----

    'A break with reality'
"She's a peaceful person," defense attorney Neal Davis told jurors.

He said that after years of abuse at the hands of Jeffrey Wright, she suffered from post-traumatic stress syndrome. When her coked-up husband raped her and beat her the night of Jan. 13, 2003, she snapped, Davis said.

"Susan had a total psychic break with reality."

    -----

    Cleaning up
    or covering up?
Prosecutors made much of the fact that after killing her husband, Wright buried him in a hole he'd been digging in their backyard for a fountain. Then she scrubbed down their bedroom and repainted it. Wright's explanation: Even with her husband buried, she feared for days that he'd return and become enraged about the mess. Prosecutors scoffed.

"Post-traumatic stress syndrome? How about cover-your-tail syndrome?" Siegler asked.

    -----

    Courtroom drama
The Wrights' blood-stained bed, state's exhibit No. 56, was dragged into the courtroom so prosecutors could re-enact Jeffrey Wright's death.

One assistant district attorney lay sprawled on the bed with his wrists and ankles tied to bedposts with neckties and terrycloth sashes, while lead prosecutor Kelly Siegler climbed on the bed and straddled her colleague, then pretended to stab him over and over.

"It's overly theatrical and I think it's overly prejudicial to the jury," Susan Wright's lawyer objected to no avail.

    -----

    Years of abuse
Wright's mother, Sue Wyche, described her daughter as a quiet, sweet girl growing up in Tomball. Wright was a former peewee football cheerleader, Brownie and church youth-group member. Her husband began beating her when she was pregnant with their child and she miscarried, Wyche said.

"She said he was beating her directly in her

    -----

    A child's testimony
"He hit me one night, two nights, three nights, four nights," Wright's 4-year-old son testified about his father on videotape.

Wright's friends testified of seeing Jeffrey Wright spank his children over and over and of noticing black eyes on Susan Wright herself.

    -----

    Wright takes the stand
Wright took the stand in her own defense and told of the night her husband, strung out on cocaine, beat and raped her. When he grabbed a butcher knife from the night stand and threatened to kill her, she wrestled it away and struck at him, she said.

    "I couldn't stop stabbing him. I couldn't stop,"

    -----

    Cross-examination
On cross-examination, Siegler asked Wright why she dumped her husband's body in a hole in the back yard and covered it with gardening soil.

"What was your plan? Were you going to make a little flowerbed there after everyone forgot about Jeff?" Siegler asked.

"There was no plan," Wright answered. "I thought I had to weigh him down because he was going to get up and be very mad."

    Liar or victim
Accused of crying on cue, Wright reacted emotionally when Siegler made her closing arguments to jurors.

"You are left with the word of Susan Lucille Wright -- the word of a card-carrying, obvious, no-doubt-about-it, confirmed, documented liar," Siegler said.

    -----

    Who grabbed the knife first?
Wright's attorney, Davis, told jurors in closing arguments to focus on Jeffrey Wright hovering over his wife with the knife.

"Someone isn't going to stab someone 193 times over a couple hundred thousand dollars," Davis said. "This was a brutal, terrifying, sadistic relationship that spanned years."

    -----

    Convicted of murder
With her attorney holding her hand, Wright showed little emotion as the verdict was read: guilty.

    -----

    Prison or probation
After their guilty verdict, jurors had to decide on Wright's punishment. Prosecutors asked for at least 45 years. Her attorneys asked for probation.

"She is evil," said the victim's sobbing father, Ron Wright. "How could any human being do what she did to my son -- stab him in the eyeballs while he was awake?"

    -----

    A final performance
Before sending jurors on their way to ponder Susan Wright's punishment, Siegler demonstrated Jeffrey Wright's stabbing one last time. She motioned toward the video cameras in the courtroom and reminded jurors they had an audience.

"You want all those people out there to think that a Texas jury gave a Texas woman probation for stabbing her husband 193 times?" Siegler asked

"You'd be patting her on the back and saying

    -----

    'A crime of desperation'
Davis made a final plea for his client to receive probation.

"If ever there were a crime of passion, if ever there was a crime of terror, if ever there was a crime of desperation, this is it," he told jurors.

The jury decided on prison time.

    -----

    25 years in prison
The sentence: 25 years. Wright was led away in tears.
